Help Shape the Future of Programming Education
Join a global research study on AI-assisted coding in education. Free tools, shared data, potential co-publication.
IU University of Applied Sciences (Germany) & ROC Nijmegen (Netherlands)
Why This Research Matters
AI Is Changing Everything
Students use ChatGPT and Copilot daily, but curricula have not adapted. 78% of professional developers use AI coding assistants — most CS programs don't address this.
Nobody Has the Data
There are hundreds of opinion pieces about AI in education, but almost zero empirical studies on how students actually interact with AI tools when coding.
We Need Evidence
This study provides the first rigorous, multi-institution dataset on how students across 6 experience levels use AI tools during real coding challenges.
What Your Institution Gets
Free Research Tools
Codeflow Recorder + organizer portal at zero cost. No infrastructure needed.
Curriculum Insights
Data-driven understanding of which skills remain essential vs. AI-delegatable.
Co-Publication
Named partnership, shared data access, and potential co-authorship on papers.
Student Experience
Students participate in a structured hackathon, learn about AI workflows, and receive certificates.

What You Need
- 15–50 students (any programming level, including beginners)
- 2 consecutive days (schedule at your convenience)
- Windows computers with internet access
- One faculty coordinator to oversee the event
- Signed ethics/consent forms (templates provided)
- Any country, any educational system
We provide everything else: tools, challenges, consent forms, full support, and analysis. Total cost: zero.
Frequently Asked Questions
What data do you collect?
Screen recordings of coding sessions, analyzed by AI for coding patterns and tool usage. All data is anonymized before shared analysis.
Is this GDPR compliant?
Yes. Consent forms are provided, data is stored in the EU, and participants can review and delete their data at any time.
How much faculty time is needed?
Approximately 4 hours of coordination total. The research team provides full support before, during, and after the hackathon.
What if our students are complete beginners?
Perfect. Beginners are one of our 6 study groups. We need data from ALL experience levels to build a complete picture.
Can we use the results in our own research?
Yes, with proper attribution under the data sharing agreement. We encourage co-publication.
Is there any cost?
Zero cost. All tools are free. The research team provides everything. This is open science.
