Study: From Coding to Co-Creating: Competency Frameworks for Human-AI Collaboration in Software Development

Principal Researcher: Davor Radic Institution: IU International University of Applied Sciences Supervisor: Dr. Mark Menzel Contact: d.radic@roc-nijmegen.nl

1. Purpose of the Study

You are invited to participate in a research study investigating how vocational programming students work with AI-assisted coding tools (such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and other AI assistants). The study aims to identify the skills students need and to develop curriculum recommendations for AI-enhanced programming education.

2. What Participation Involves

Your participation consists of:

  • Preparation Phase (~60 minutes, at home): You will complete 6 short tutorials (2 videos and 4 reading guides) covering AI tools, ethics, and the Codeflow Recorder application. You will install the Codeflow Recorder on your laptop, complete a short test recording (5 minutes), and fill in a pre-hackathon survey about your coding experience.

  • Coding Sprint Day (~3 hours, on-site at your school): A 1-hour coding challenge (hackathon) in small groups, followed by team presentations, a self-reflection survey, and a peer evaluation form.

  • Optional: A short follow-up interview (approximately 15 minutes, conducted online) about your experience during the hackathon.

3. What Data Is Collected

During the coding sprint, the Codeflow Recorder application will capture the following data from your laptop:

Data TypeDescription
Screen videoRecording of your screen during the 1-hour coding sprint (10 FPS, MP4 format)
Keystroke frequencyThe number of keystrokes per time interval (NOT the actual keys or text typed)
Paste eventsDetection of copy-paste actions (as an indicator of AI-generated code usage)
Window switchesWhich applications you switch between (e.g., VS Code, Claude, browser)
Session metadataStart time, stop time, and duration of your recording session
Survey responsesYour answers to the pre-hackathon survey, post-hackathon self-reflection survey, and peer evaluation form

What Is NOT Collected

  • No webcam or audio recording
  • No actual keystroke content (passwords, personal messages, etc.)
  • No personal files, browsing history, or activity outside the coding sprint
  • No data is collected before or after the recording session

4. How Your Data Is Protected

  • All data is pseudonymized using a participant ID. Your name is not stored with your recordings or survey responses. Only the principal researcher can link your participant ID to your identity.
  • Data is transmitted and stored using encryption on secured Firebase servers within the European Union.
  • Only the principal researcher (Davor Radic) and the supervising professor (Dr. Mark Menzel) have access to the research data.
  • Data is stored for the duration of the study and will be deleted within 2 years after the study concludes.
  • The research complies fully with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR / DSGVO).

5. Voluntary Participation & Withdrawal

  • Your participation is entirely voluntary. You may decline to participate without any consequences.
  • You may withdraw at any time during the study without giving a reason. If you withdraw, your data will be deleted.
  • You may choose to participate in the hackathon but decline the optional interview — these are separate.
  • Your participation or non-participation will have no effect on your grades or academic standing.

6. Risks and Benefits

  • Risks: The study involves minimal risk. Screen recording only captures your coding activity during the hackathon. No sensitive personal data is collected.
  • Benefits: You will gain hands-on experience with AI-assisted programming tools, collaborative software development, and a hackathon-style learning environment. These are valuable skills for your future career.

7. Use of Results

  • The research results will be published in a Master's thesis at IU International University of Applied Sciences.
  • Results may also be presented at academic conferences or published in academic journals.
  • No individual participant will be identifiable in any publication. All results are reported in aggregated, fully anonymized form.

8. Your Rights Under GDPR

Under the EU General Data Protection Regulation, you have the right to:

  • Access your personal data held by the researcher
  • Rectify inaccurate personal data
  • Delete your data ("right to be forgotten")
  • Restrict processing of your data
  • Object to the processing of your data
  • Data portability — receive your data in a structured format
